The Guido Adler Jazz
Piano Scholarship Competition is a project of the non-profit Adler Foundation Fund at The San Diego Foundation.
The 2007 Guido Adler Jazz Piano Scholarship was given to the Idyllwild Summer Program at the Idyllwild Arts Academy.
The scholarship was specifically earmarked by the Academy to be awarded to a qualified high school jazz pianist who otherwise
financially would be unable to attend the Idyllwild Summer Program.
.
The Adler Foundation, based in San Diego, has a two-fold purpose. The first is to support watchdogs, whistleblowers, journalists and others who
work to uncover and publicize governmental or corporate agencies who are engaged in unethical practices. Secondly,
to encourage the playing of jazz by awarding scholarships to high school students and also supporting high school jazz programs.
.
2006
was the first year of the Scholarship Competition. The winner, Dan Reckard (far right), won a $4,000 scholarship to be
applied to the college of his choice. In addition, his high school, The Orange County High School of the Arts, received $1,000
for the purpose of furthering jazz education in their school. The 2007 Competition date will be announced
shortly. To hear Dan Reckard play, click on the links at the bottom of this page.
.
In the last few years, spending for the performing arts in
our high schools has been severely cut back or eliminated altogether. The goal of the competition is to
seek out and award scholarships to the best high school jazz pianists in the state of California and, as a by product,
to promote interest in jazz in high schools and their communities through the use of public competitions and concerts.
Any funds or in-kind services received from outside individual or corporate sponsors will be used to promote high school
jazz programs. For more information, please email us at GuidoJazz@cox.net.
